OPINION: Detective Gordon’s Press Conference Was a Reckless Display of Bureaucratic Vanity
Yesterday afternoon Detective James Gordon took to the steps of the GCPD to deliver a highly televised and deeply theatrical address regarding a serial killer known to the underworld as “The Ogre”. While mainstream media outlets are already rushing to paint Gordon as a rogue white knight fighting a “culture of silence” a closer look at the facts reveals a deeply disturbing truth. This press conference was a reckless and politically motivated stunt that has actively placed civilian lives in the crosshairs.
For years senior leadership within our police department maintained a policy of tactical non provocation regarding this specific killer. This was not out of cowardice as Detective Gordon self righteously claimed but out of a measured and data driven understanding of the suspect’s psychological triggers. The Ogre strikes exclusively at the families and loved ones of the law enforcement officers who pursue him. By aggressively poking the nest on live television Gordon did not protect Gotham. He merely signed a death warrant for anyone within his own social orbit.
Whispers from inside City Hall suggest Gordon’s broadcast was actually a calculated ego driven attempt to undermine Commissioner Gillian Loeb. Sources indicate that Gordon is currently romantically entangled with GCPD Medical Examiner Dr. Leslie Thompkins If Dr. Thompkins or perhaps Gordon’s high society former fiancée Barbara Kean becomes the next victim of this monster the blood will not just be on the killer’s hands. It will be entirely on Detective Gordon’s hands.
Gotham needs calculated strategic policing and not an unstable detective using the city’s airwaves to fight personal vendettas under the guise of transparency.
